Universal Design Implementations: Rubrics: Rubric for final project is here Rubric for peer evaluations after the coöperative learning activity here
Content Level Differentiation: By allowing students to choose which level of government they would like to create a bill for, students have the opportunity to to choose their own difficulty level for the project, as each level of government would require different knowledge. Additionally, by allowing students to choose which demographic break down they would like to use to support their claim that their law will be passed at that government level, students in effect choose their own difficulty level for the mathematics needed to support their claim. This project is a low-entry, high-exit task that allows all students to find success in its implementation, and allows high achieving students the opportunity to go above and beyond by creating more intricacies within their project. Helping all students choose an appropriate level of difficulty for their skills will occur when students "pitch" their project to their history teacher and when students are choosing demographics to use for probability analysis in their mathematics class.
Vocabulary Development: This will be addressed in our cooperative learning assignment. Vocabulary Needed for this lesson: Republican,voter/ballot initiative, target demographic, Democrat, liberal, conservative, veto, quid pro quo, filibuster -Students will make vocabulary squares for the words. (wherein they fold a white paper into squares with three columns. In the first column they write the words in the far left column, they write the word’s definition in the middle (that they have re-written in their own words) and then draw a graphic that goes with it in the far-right column.
Multiple intelligences: Interpersonal - Through the coöperative learning activity Logic Smart - Doing the probability calculations Picture smart - creating an advertisement that attempts to sway people. Word smart - vocabulary development Music smart - The students can create a commercial and set it to music during their summative assignment. Kinesthetic - Students are encouraged to do a performing arts activity during summative assignment
